A Quick Guide To Understanding Insulation
Understanding Insulation -
A lot of people find the thought of insulating their home very overwhelming but this doesn't have to be the case at all. All it takes is a little bit of research and familiarising yourself with the products and different types of insulation, once you've managed to do that you can be well on your way to insulating your home and saving money on your energy bills.
R-Value
This is the most important thing to look out for, this will tell you how thermal resistant the material that you end up choosing is. This will directly affect the heat transfer in your home and the higher the R-Value is, the more effective your insulation will be. Ceilings and Walls require high R-Value products and Batts will give you that.
Fibrous insulation
Fibrous insulation is insulation that works by trapping air within the fibers, this process of preventing heat transmission is called convection. This type of insulation can also be good at soundproofing and it is often used for acoustic insulation. This type of insulation can be in rigid forms but it is usually flexible. Fibrous insulation can be irritating to the skin so be wary of that if you're installing.
Reflective Insulation
Reflective is not like fibrous insulation in the sense that it does not restrict conductive heat flow. Like the name suggests it works by reflecting majority of the heat instead of allowing it to transfer through, you'll often find that this can be accomplished by using a foil type material. If you think of a campfire, the warmth you're feeling is from radiation.
Heat Flow
The way heat transfers is through your roof, walls, and the windows of your home and this is due to conduction, convection, and radiation. Heat gain is when it is a high temperature outside and the heat transfers through the home. When you reverse that process it is called heat loss and a well insulated home will help both of these issues.
Conclusion -
As I've said in the other blogs, it's very important to familiarise yourself with how insulation works before you start purchasing or installing insulation.
