Expanded polystyrene (EPS) and Extruded polystyrene (XPS) are high performance, durable and lightweight boards of thermal insulation. They provide strong insulation properties which can be used around the absorption of water.

The use of rigid boards offer great flexibility and thermal efficiency in both commercial and residential properties.

XPS boards eliminate air flow through frames reducing movement through the wall providing  insulation. XPS comes in both 30 and 50mm thickness and its dimensions are 600 x 2400.

EPS is a white foam material (as shown in the image above) that is produced from polystyrene. It is a rigid closed cell insulation and comes in 25, 40 and 50mm thickness; and its dimensions are 1200 x 2500. A regular window is assembled with one pane of glass, meaning the only thing separating you from the outside world is singular pane. This is where double glazing becomes a popular option that our customers tend to go with. It uses two panes of glass which are set together with a sealed spacer in between trapping the wanted heat inside. It reduces condensation, noise and drastically lowers energy bills.

Double glazing is an ideal money saver, and provides drastic home improvements by acting as an extra layer of insulation in areas where the cold would usually pass through. The thermal resistance does not only decrease the heat escaping in the colder months, but also helps regulate your inside temperature in summer. It is important to keep in mind that double glazing has to be installed into a good quality frame, but don't stress that is something our professional consultants can confirm when we come out to give you a FREE quote!

Secondary glazing (as shown in the image above) is also often a common choice for customers who cannot replace their windows, and want the benefits of double glazing; so choose install a duplicate of the existing window. It is known to reduce more noise than single glazing and just as much as double glazing. This is because of the large layer of air cavity that is installed between the two windows.

The separation of the two frames provides a thermal break which eliminates the original problem of heat loss found in aluminum frames. The second glass fits seamlessly over the existing window providing an additional coating of warmth and noise cancellation.

Customers often contact us asking what the main difference between the two products are, the main differences between the two is the amount of heat and light that they allow through, this is a very important factor to consider especially if you're using it for a pergola/outdoor environment. The Laserlite 3000 should be considered in scenarios where you're concerned the heat may become a problem if you're sitting underneath it as it reflects a lot more heat.

If you've been researching or shopping around for insulation then you've probably noticed one technical term that keeps popping up, the R-Value.
This is a simple way that we measure how effective a product is at insulating, the higher the r-value is, the better it is at insulating. It may sound like a simple process but there is a specific formula being followed in order to figure out this value and that is by figuring out the thickness of your product and dividing it by it's thermal conductivity.

What is thermal conductivity?

Thermal conductivity is essentially just measuring the heat flow of a certain material/product, if the product has a high resistance to heat flow then it will have a high r-value and it will be a good insulator, if it has a bad resistance to heat flow then it will have a low r-value but it will be a good conductor.
There's a lot of science involved here which can often lead to a lot of confusion but the main goal would be to find the product with the highest r-value that is most appropriate for your situation, often the cost of a product can influence this decision.
It's worth noting that for our Batts for example, some of them are too thick to fit in the studs of walls, this is often because there is too much material in the product and in this case you would probably have to opt for a lower r-value as the product will be less thick.
